Adin Steinsaltz offers us here an original and insightful reading of a great master of Hasidism, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. The great-grandson of the Baal Shem Tov, founder of Hasidism, Rabbi Nachman displayed remarkable preaching talent from a very young age. By the age of twenty, he was surrounded by disciples and followers captivated by his unique approach, while his irreconcilable opposition to the establishment and the powerful earned him many conflicts.
A man of great erudition, he often jotted down his reflections, the foundation of his teachings, but burned what he had written as he went along. Towards the end of his life, he mainly told stories inspired by both folk tales and legends, as well as by Kabbalah, the mystical interpretation of Judaism. These "tales of ancient times," as he liked to call them, are imbued with the symbolism of the "seventy aspects of the Torah."
Through his insightful commentary, Adin Steinsaltz invites us to discover its hidden facets.
