Description
The Book of Ezra marks the beginning of the history of the Second Temple, but also the most significant event: the establishment by the leaders of the nation—Ezra, Nehemiah, Zerubbabel, and their colleagues—of the Kenesset HaGedolah, the Great Assembly, which laid the foundations of national existence: the Mishnah and the Talmud, the ritual of prayers and daily life. According to the Talmud, if Moses had not existed, Ezra would have been deemed worthy to transmit the Torah to us.
