During the six days of the week, man is immersed in his daily activities, transforming his surroundings, investing himself wholeheartedly in improving his environment, and must also work "by the sweat of his brow" to earn the means to ensure his survival. This necessity of earning a living is often a source of torment, worry, and even anguish. More than that, this imperative can create a distance between man and his Creator. In many cases, the connection with his Creator risks weakening or even disappearing. During Shabbat, the Torah requires man to withdraw and refrain from interfering in his surroundings. Any action by which he demonstrates his control over the world is forbidden. He must not interfere with nature so as not to claim mastery over it. During Shabbat, man will not use his power over nature; he is at peace with it. Hence the concept of Shabbat Shalom. We wish each other Shabbat Shalom! because the goal to achieve during this day is harmony between humankind, nature, and the Creator. This harmony is the source of all blessings and all successes. Shabbat symbolizes our faith in the Creator's creation of the world. One day a week, we are given the opportunity to live and deeply feel this close relationship with our Creator. Let us take advantage of it! It is with this mindset that we must approach Shabbat, and it is with this mindset that we must live every moment of this profoundly restorative day. We hope that through the study of the various chapters of this book, the reader will be able to benefit from the treasures hidden in our holy Torah, so that they may enjoy the promises made by our Sages to all who observe Shabbat. It is a day during which this faith should be transformed into a much clearer and more tangible reality.
